At the Start of the war the 102d Ill. was engaged with guarding railroads and chasing Guerrillas. In mid 1863 five companies were mounted and armed with Spencer Rifles. In Feb. of 1864 the mounts were turned in but the 102d kept the Spencers.

Service History
The 142d Illinois Infantry Volunteers was organized at Freeport, Ill., by Col. Rollin V. Ankney as a Battalion of eight companies, and ordered to Camp Butler, Springfield, Ill., where two companies were added, and the Regiment Mustered June 18, 1864 for 100 days.
On June 21, 1864 the Regiment moved to Memphis via Cairo and Mississippi River, and arrived on the 24th. On th 26th moved to White's Station, 11 miles fro Memphis, on the Memphis and Charleston Railroad, where it was assigned to guarding the railroad.
Mustered Out of the United States service Oct. 27, 1864, at Chicago, Ill.
